History Rock_1 Justin HardineNamed after a rock about a mile from the trailhead where many have inscribed their name in the soft rock face.  Here is a trail that will put your technical riding skills and your lung capacity to the test.  Not a long trail but it does get down to business fairly quick.  Leaving the trailhead you have an easy ride through an open meadow before you disappear into the trees for the majority of the ride.  This trail progressively gets steeper and more technical as you go, so don’t come out of the gate at full speed.  This trail is a great blend of rocks and roots that seem to intertwine in a beautiful harmony.  As you approach the 1.5 mile marker into the ride, you are meet History Rock_3 Justin Hardinewith a hairpin right turn, thus the beginning of a very steep climb and tight switchbacks.  After grinding through the steep switchbacks, you are greeted with a field off to your right (two fallen trees block access to it, please leave the trees in place and just step over) and ride out into the field to check out the great view of Hyalite reservoir.  The trail will come to a junction about 2.75 miles into the ride and continue left uphill.  The last section of the trail beyond the junction is another unforgiving steep section with roots littering the trail all the way to the summit.  At the top, you will be greeted with great views of Mt. Blackmore (slightly to the left), Wheeler Gulch, and South Cottonwood canyon (center and right).

Driving Directions:

Departing from Bozeman, drive west on Main Street and take a left (south) on 19th.  Continue to drive on 19th Street headed south and west out of town for approximately 7 miles until you reach the turn to Hyalite Canyon.  Make a left-hand turn onto Hyalite Canyon Road and continue up approx. 10 miles and make a right-hand turn into the History Rock trailhead parking lot. If you reach the reservoir, you have gone too far.
